Jurgen Klopp confirms Daniel Sturridge set for knee scan

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Daniel Sturridge will undergo a scan on his troublesome knee injury and could miss Sunday's match against Southampton if the results are not positive.

The striker has been unavailable for both games under Klopp after suffering an injury when he collided with teammate Jordon Ibe during a routine training session.

Liverpool have failed to win both of those games and the return of Sturridge has been much anticipated by both the German manager and the Anfieild faithful as a result.

However, it looks as if they may have to wait a little bit longer for the England international as his knee is taking more time to recover than originally anticipated.

Klopp will not make a final decision on whether to include him in the squad until tomorrow, when the results of his latest scan will confirm whether he can train or not.

The new manager told reporters: "I spoke with Daniel a few minutes ago. It's not much better at the moment. With Daniel's injury, we have to see day by day. Maybe he'll be a little better tomorrow.

"If he can train completely normally tomorrow, then it's no problem and he's an option, but I have to wait for this. Today he needs treatment and a scan because there's a little fluid in the knee. We have to see."

Two-striker system

Having drawn with both Tottenham Hotspur and Rubin Kazan, Klopp suggested he may have to use a different attacking system against the Saints regardless of whether Sturridge can play or not.

With Danny Ings also out with a much more serious knee injury, the German suggested that the club's only two fit strikers, Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino, could play together.

"If all the strikers are fit we have four and we have to think about how we take that quality in our game," he added.

"I don't know if we play with two on Sunday, but it's an option. Christian and Roberto had two training sessions with the team, usually it's too early but they did well. Christian was unlucky with the post, Roberto became better within the game. Two important options for Sunday."
