Manchester United fans have called on Louis van Gaal to drop Wayne Rooney after he failed to inspire his team against local rivals Manchester City.

In what was a drab and dismal 0-0 stalemate at Old Trafford, Rooney's lack of contribution up front was quickly picked up by fans on social media with the England international becoming the top trending topic on Twitter soon after the final whistle.

He may be their captain and probably one of their best ever players, but his lack of form has convinced many of Manchester United's fanbase that he needs a spell on the sidelines.

Indeed, a tweet by Squawka shows how ineffective Rooney, who celebrated his 30th birthday yesterday, was against the Citizens. He had no shots, created no chances and completed just 55 per cent of his passes.

With just two Premier League goals to his name all season, it seems the time may have come for Van Gaal to start considering other options up front.
