Why the New England Patriots' undefeated start is just a mirage

Published 21 Comments

The New England Patriots continued their undefeated start to the season and moved to 6-0 this past weekend with a 30-23 victory against their divisional rivals, the New York Jets.

The AFC East side remains one of five teams that are yet to lose in the NFL this season, an incredible achievement as they attempt to replicate their 2007 season and go one better and win the Super Bowl.

But, the whole concept of the Patriots being 6-0 this season may be just a mirage, so they can forget about having another undefeated season. This is why.

The only worthy win the Patriots have had so far this year has been the opening game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was a good win, and Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski were electric.

However, their other five wins have either been lucky or a given. It would have been embarrassing for the Patriots to lose against the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, an injured Dallas Cowboys, and an out-of-form Indianapolis Colts because all of those teams had problems. Either the team was in a bad state, or the team didn't have a lot of quality on their roster.

They came so close to losing to the Jets yesterday, so the undefeated start to the season is nothing which the Patriots can boast about anymore. Two fourth quarter touchdowns were needed to properly shut out the game.

The defense simply wasn't good enough to help the offense. And that is going to be exposed in the games to come over the next few weeks. Over the season so far, they simply haven't been playing like a defense that can help the team stay undefeated this season.

Remember as well, the game yesterday was at Foxborough, so the Patriots should have closed out the game a lot sooner.

This week, the Patriots will take on another divisional rival, the Miami Dolphins, on Thursday night. A team which has managed to find its form since the change at head coach from Joe Philbin to Dan Campbell.

An in-form Miami team will be another test for the Patriots, one which they will fall at unless they sort out their defensive issues. But even then, the team simply hasn't been tested so far to actually give them the title of being undefeated. They haven't earned it, it's just been handed to them in their lap.

Can the New England Patriots remain undefeated this season? Or when will they lose their first game? Have your say and leave a comment below...
