Chelsea striker Diego Costa taken to hospital with rib injury

Published 6 Comments

Diego Costa is a major doubt for Saturday's crucial Premier Leauge game against Liverpool after suffering a rib injury in the Capital One Cup defeat to Stoke City.

The Blues took another step towards total dismay on a cold and wet night in the Britannia Stadium. They went out on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes with Eden Hazard missing the crucial spot-kick.

Costa was forced off in the 30th minute after he was sandwiched between Ryan Shawcross and Charlie Adam in a tackle. The injury was serious enough to see the Brazilian striker taken to a hospital.

With Liverpool set to travel to Stamford Bridge in just three days time, it looks as though Loic Remy, who scored the last-minute equaliser against the Potters, will deputise.

"I don't know," Mourinho told one reporter when asked if Costa will be fit. "He is in the hospital. I think he punched himself in the ribs."

That last comment, you may have guessed, was a joke about Costa's reputation as an on-field menace. The former Atletico Madrid man has already had to serve a three-match ban this season after his antics against Arsenal upset someone at the Football Association.

D-Day for Mourinho

If Costa does not recover in time to face Jurgen Klopp's men, it makes life that little bit harder for the Special One. He is already facing the prospect of a touchline ban and it is believed that he will be sacked if his team succumb to their sixth Premier League defeat of the season against the Reds.

Liverpool themselves are in a spell of bad form, but Philippe Coutinho and Co. will be desperate to get their first win under their new manager. In the race for a top-four place, this result could be crucial.
