Jose Mourinho confirms Didier Drogba will not return to Chelsea on loan

Published 3 Comments

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Didier Drogba will not be returning to Chelsea on loan in January.

Drogba has been in fine form for Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer - scoring 12 goals in as many appearances - and some fans believe the Ivory Coast legend would still be more effective than Radamel Falcao, who has struggled in west London since arriving from AS Monaco in the summer, despite his age.

However, Mourinho has no desire to bring the 37-year-old back to the Bridge on a loan deal, despite his status as a Chelsea hero.

When asked if Drogba could return, Mourinho - per the London Evening Standard - replied: "Do you want me to compare the Premier League with the MLS?

“Didier will always offer something to a club and the group that loves him and that he loves. No doubt about it. But will I bring him back? No."

Some fans will be disappointed

Mourinho’s answer will disappoint certain members of the Blues’ faithful who still idolise the African striker.

However, Drogba struggled to produce his best form for Chelsea last season - scoring seven goals in 40 appearances - and is clearly past his prime.

Drogba would still be a better option than Falcao

That doesn’t mean, however, that he would be less effective than Falcao.

The Colombia international has been linked with a loan move to Zenit St Petersburg after an underwhelming opening three months at Stamford Bridge, although manager Andre Villas-Boas has since denied the speculation.

Falcao has scored one goal in 10 appearances for the Blues and currently finds himself as Chelsea’s third-choice striker behind both Diego Costa and Loic Remy.
