Garth Crooks has named Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho in his Team of the Week following his impressive display in the 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The French centre-back, who has been superb in recent weeks, is currently playing like a “man possessed”, according to the BBC Sport pundit.

Crooks added that there was one particular aspect of Sakho’s game that left him “startled” - his distribution.

“Can someone please tell me what has got into Mamadou Sakho in these past few games?” Crooks wrote in his latest column. “The Liverpool centre-back is playing like a man possessed. He battles for every ball as though his life depends on it.

“Yet it was the quality of his distribution that startled me. It happened in the first half when he hit a wonderful Steven Gerrard-esque 40-yard diagonal pass for Nathaniel Clyne and he did it again in the second half. This time it was destined for Christian Benteke to attack and set up Philippe Coutinho's second goal.

“I said last week that Sakho might be surplus to requirements once Jurgen Klopp gets his chequebook out in the transfer window. But the way Sakho's playing the new boss might start building his team around the France international.”

Sakho is getting better and better

Indeed, Sakho has won many admirers this season, with fans now regularly chanting his name from the stands.

There’s no chance that Klopp will even consider the idea of selling the former Paris Saint-Germain defender, who arrived at Anfield in a €17 million deal two summers ago, if he continues playing like he is.

Klopp described Sakho as “absolutely spectacular” after last month’s 1-1 draw against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League and it seems the 25-year-old has already made himself indispensable in the eyes of his new manager.
