Dietmar Hamann has urged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp not to sign club legend Steven Gerrard on loan, claiming the all-action midfielder returning to Anfield is “the last thing” he needs.
In fact, Hamann - who played alongside Gerrard at Anfield - believes even inviting the former England international to training sessions would be a bad idea.
Reports suggest Gerrard could return to Liverpool on a short-term loan deal in January, ahead of the 2016 MLS campaign, but Hamann is convinced Klopp is best off avoiding the hassle it would inevitably cause.

“Klopp has had a decent start and what he needs now is peace and quiet,” the ex-German international told talkSPORT today. “We all know what Steven Gerrard did for the club, but even if he does train at the club, if a central midfielder gets injured, the first question at the press conference on a Friday will be, ‘are you going to give him [Gerrard] a contract?’
“And that’s the last thing Klopp needs, constant speculation about Steven Gerrard. I’m not sure even training with them is a good idea.”
Fans excited by prospect of Gerrard return
Plenty of Liverpool fans will disagree with the former Germany international, who played for Liverpool between 1999-2006 and helped the Reds win the Champions League.
Many supporters are excited by the prospect of Gerrard returning to Anfield on a short-term deal - much in the same way Arsenal fans were before Thierry Henry returned on loan to the Emirates Stadium in January 2012.
Gerrard may feel he has unfinished business at Liverpool, despite spending 17 years as a professional at Anfield, after the disastrous end to the 2014-15 campaign under Brendan Rodgers.
Klopp reluctant to offer Gerrard a playing role
However, Klopp has made it clear this evening that while Gerrard is welcome to train with Liverpool, the LA Galaxy midfielder is unlikely to appear for the Merseyside outfit in a competitive match again.
