The Germany international, 21, feels Gerrard is irreplaceable at Anfield because of his influence both on and off the pitch.
The former Reds’ captain left Liverpool at the end of last season in order to join Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy, bringing an end to his 17-year professional career with the Merseyside outfit in the process. There has been speculation that Gerrard could return to Anfield on loan; however, Jurgen Klopp dismissed that idea last week.

But it seems Can would relish the opportunity to reunite with the Liverpool hero, judging by his bizarre comment involving Messi.
"I don't think anyone can replace Gerrard, be it Messi or whoever," Can was quoted as telling the Daily Mail by Goal. "Of course I would like to follow in his path but he really was the best player for Liverpool, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well."
Messi is obviously a better player than Gerrard
Can might change his mind, though, if he ever plays against Messi at his world-class best. The four-time Ballon d’Or winner is a significantly better footballer than Gerrard - even the most die-hard Liverpool fan would admit that much is true - and will finish his career as arguably the best player ever to play the game.

The German coach will obviously respect how fans - and players - feel about the former England international, but he won’t play to the gallery and bring him back to Anfield for sentimental reasons.
Gerrard is well past his best and probably should have left Liverpool a season earlier than he did.
Saying Messi wouldn’t be able to replace him is an insult to the Barcelona star’s talent.
