The Mirror understand that Steve McClaren is keen to bring the England international back to the north-east in January to ensure the Magpies finish as high as possible in the Premier League table.
Newcastle sold Carroll to Liverpool for £35 million in January 2011, but a combination of poor form and injuries saw the targetman offloaded to West Ham for just £15 million two years later.

On his day, Carroll is a nightmare for opposing defenders to play against. Few strikers in world football are better than the 6ft 4in star in the air, as he demonstrated for the Hammers in their 2-1 win over champions Chelsea last month.
But his inability to keep himself fit would be a major concern for the Newcastle hierarchy; while it seems some fans have still not forgiven him for leaving his boyhood club almost five years ago.

Fans love Mitrović and Perez
Newcastle fans might also argue that they no longer need a striker like Carroll after signing the Serbia international Aleksandar Mitrović in the summer.
The 21-year-old possesses impressive physical attributes and has shown glimpses of his class at St James’ Park following his move from Anderlecht.
Supporters might also be concerned that the return of Carroll could force Newcastle to sell the club’s best young player Ayoze Perez, who is wanted by several clubs including Manchester United, in order to balance the books.
