Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been quick to dampen any talk of transfers so far during his time at Anfield, calling the English media obsessed with “money, money, money,” as reported by Goal.com.
But nothing can stop transfer rumours, and a small section of Liverpool fans online have been getting rather excited about the prospect of signing one of Germany’s next big stars: Schalke’s Leroy Sane.
Former Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft tweeted this week that Liverpool are expected to “go big” for the 19-year-old and the Telegraph also reported on the former Swindon striker’s prediction, prompting a state of frenzy in a number of Reds fans.
But who is Leroy Sane?
The lightning quick winger signed a professional contract with Schalke 04 in March 2014, making his league debut for the Gelsenkirchen club in April of that year.
However, it was on his Champions League debut against Real Madrid last season that Sane really introduced himself to the world. The 19-year-old, brought on as a first-half substitute, curled home a delicious left-foot strike past Iker Casillas for Schalke’s third goal of the night before setting up Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for the winner. The Royal Blues won the game 4-3, but were eliminated on aggregate.
Sane showed against Madrid exactly what he’s about – pace, dribbling skills, and a powerful and accurate shot that can rival any current Liverpool player.
“I’ve fulfilled my dream, as I’ll be able to run out with the best players in the country. I want to make a good impression and gather experience,” said Sane of his call-up, as reported on the German FA website.
He’ll join up with Liverpool midfielder Emre Can whilst on international duty, and perhaps the defensive midfielder will have a few pleasant words to whisper in Sane's ear about his current home.
Of course, rumours are rumours, and a move to Liverpool seems even more unlikely for Sane when you consider that a Schalke player would be moving to a side managed by a former Dortmund coach.
But stranger things have happened, and the hype around a move for the winger only seems to be growing. Perhaps it could be Sane that fills the boots of Raheem Sterling in Liverpool red in the coming seasons.
