Sami Zayn has had a tough 2015.

How should the WWE book Sami Zayn to return?

It was expected that Sam Zayn would be a big star on the main roster by now. but the wrestler has endured a difficult 2015.

After injuring his shoulder a few months ago when he answered John Cena’s United States Championship open challenge, Zayn left for surgery and his spot was taken by current Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens.

Zayn looked fantastic in his match with Cena and he looked like he was made for the main roster, but luck hasn’t been on his side with past injury concerns. It is now, though, being reported that Zayn has resumed light training and is taking part in light workouts at the WWE Performance Center.

This is definitely great news to hear, although fans shouldn’t get too excited as his return isn't expected to take place this year.

It’s a tough situation for the WWE right now with some top stars missing and somebody like Zayn could have definitely played a top face on the main roster, but now the WWE need to think about when would be best to bring Sami back.

It needs to be a surprise, even though he isn't a top main roster star he needs to be booked like one because it brings a sense of excitement for when he does eventually arrive.

Here are three options I believe are available for the WWE and Sami Zayn.

If Zayn isn’t going to jump straight onto the main roster upon his return then I feel an appearance at a TakeOver event next year will be the perfect way to ease him back on to NXT.

He made a huge name for himself on NXT and it would be good to see him return to close the NXT chapter for good, rather than leaving on a sour night by exiting due to injury. I feel that a surprise return at TakeOver would work far better than a return during a normal episode.

The reason for this is that the NXT shows are taped in advance, which means it won’t be much of a surprise as results are posted online within minutes of the tapings coming to a close.

A TakeOver return where he targets a top heel would be a good final feud for Zayn on NXT before moving up at last.

The easy and likely option will be the Royal Rumble but obviously that all depends on whether Zayn is ready to compete by late January.

The good thing is that it will be a huge surprise - as is every surprise entrant in the Rumble - but because there are a lot of stars involved, he probably won’t have a high workload. He could take a step back and play a light role in the Rumble.

This doesn’t mean he will win, but chances are he will attack a familiar foe with whom he has a lot of history.

Targeting Kevin Owens will probably be the aim of any Zayn return as they have so much history and even more chemistry together.

They both did some of their finest work on NXT during their feud as there was genuine emotion involved.

The fans adored Zayn and couldn’t help but hate Owens for his actions and the fact that Owens is Intercontinental Champion, it could create a huge match next year.

If Zayn is ready to compete by February or March, then a championship match between the two could be on the cards for WrestleMania 32 and it would be great to see two top indie stars perform in the biggest WrestleMania ever.
