Robin van Persie dismisses reports linking him to Chelsea and Barcelona

Published 1 Comments

Fenerbahce striker Robin van Persie has dismissed speculation linking him with a surprise move to Chelsea or Barcelona in January.

The former Manchester United striker, who left Old Trafford after three seasons back in the summer, has been linked with several big European clubs in recent weeks - including Chelsea and Barça - after failing to establish himself as the main man at Fenerbahce.

Van Persie has scored five goals in 12 league appearances for his current employers but only completed 90 minutes on one occasion. The 32-year-old has also found himself on the substitutes’ bench at times.

However, the Netherlands international has confirmed that he is committed to Fenerbahce and admitted he hasn’t received any offers to play elsewhere.

"There is a lot of talk about Chelsea and Barcelona,” Van Persie told, per ESPN, “but I have received no offers and I am dedicated to Fenerbahce.”

Good short-term option for Chelsea or Barcelona?

It could be argued that Van Persie wouldn’t be a bad short-term signing for either Barcelona or Chelsea.

Would he be an upgrade on Radamel Falcao at Stamford Bridge? Yes.

Would he be a decent option off the bench for Barcelona? Possibly.

Van Persie needs a confidence boost

It’s true that Van Persie is a now shadow of the world-class striker who won back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot awards with Arsenal and Manchester United, but a large part of that is because his confidence has been smashed to pieces.

Being told he was surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal must have hit him hard, while he has had very little to celebrate since then with either his club side or international team. The Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and part of their failure was down to Van Persie, who scored a tragicomic own goal against the Czech Republic in October.

Van Persie is a player in steep decline and has been for some time now, but perhaps a move to a top European club could help him resurrect his career.
