Five potential landing spots for Robert Griffin III

Published 10 Comments

Robert Griffin III was once heralded as the future of the NFL, he - along with Colin Kaepernick and Russel Wilson - was supposed to be part of a new breed of NFL quarterbacks who possess the ability to torch you throwing, and running the football.

Fast-forward to the present day, Russell Wilson is the only remaining starter out of the three. It begs the question; where did it all go wrong?

That can be debated for hours, was it RG3's injury? Was it the coaches trying to mould him into a pocket quarterback? Was it RG3 himself trying to be a pocket quarterback?

All are valid questions, but I'm not going to delve into any of them. What I am going to delve into is the potential landing spots for RG3 next season, if he gets released/traded from the Redskins franchise.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams franchise provides an exciting environment for Griffin to enter. With a fantastic defence and a solid run game centred around rookie sensation Todd Gurley, RG3 could slot in as the quarterback that this franchise desperately needs.

One caveat that needs to be mentioned is that he would need to exercise his mobility for this move to make sense. The zone read between RG3 and Gurley could be deadly if the quarterback finds confidence in his running ability.

The duo of Griffin III and Gurley could bait defenses into pinching on so many runs that the play-action game could be wide open. RG3 in St.Louis could be very, very interesting.

Washington Redskins v New York Giants

Cleveland Browns

The Browns' eternal quarterback search could lead them to go after the Redskins quarterback, especially if the current off-field worries regarding Johnny Manziel continue.

It might not be the most ideal of spots for RG3 to enter, however, as the Browns are shackled with arguably the league's worst group of skill players.

Headlining the list of no-names is Dwayne Bowe, a definite no-show when it comes to game time, as the receiver has only caught three passes since joining the Browns. A huge disappointment, especially for his $13 million price tag.

Cleveland Browns v Cincinnati Bengals

This situation may not be the best from our perspective, but the Cleveland Browns are the ones bringing the dollars, so seeing RG3 in Cleveland could happen.

New York Jets

The Jets are similar to the Rams in that they have a solid defence, a power run game, and an even better core of receivers than St. Louis. Although they do have a fading offensive line.

Griffin in New York might be too much for the quarterback to handle, however, especially when you take into account how badly he handled the media in Washington. Entering the eye of the media storm in New York might not be the best of ideas.

Houston Texans

The Texans franchise is desperate for a quarterback, in fact, the quarterback position is the only position holding them back from achieving a far greater record than their current 5-5.

With DeAndre Hopkins in place as a rising star, a solid enough offensive line, a good defence that has the capability to shut teams down, and a running game featuring the multi-capable Arian Foster, this is a very talented team that RG3 could join and be successful in.

Joining the Texans would also give him the added motivation of going up against Andrew Luck twice a year, and joining a division he could legitimately help the Texans win.

Indianapolis Colts v Washington Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles would be a very interesting team to watch with RG3 in Chip Kelly's system. The mobile quarterback seems to own every physical skill needed to run Chip Kelly's scheme to perfection.

That being said, the Eagles and Chip Kelly are rumoured to be parting ways after this season according to ESPN's Adam Schefter who said on SiruisXM NFL Radio:

"I think both sides are sick of each other. I think the fans are tired of him. I think he's tired of the situation there."

So this dream matchup of Chip & RG3 may never happen.

Still, the Eagles have a talented group of running backs that - with or without Chip - could turn into a dangerous running team, especially with Griffin III running and play-action ability.

Whether or not the Redskins release RG3 has yet to be seen, but if they do, one of those above teams should pounce on the talented youngster in hopes that they can restore his confidence, and utilise his skills to help them win.

Which team do you think RG3 will end up on? Are there any other teams that could make a run at the quarterback? Comment below.
