Simon Mignolet has expressed his delight after Liverpool secured their place in the Europa League knockout rounds on Thursday night - even though his mistake almost cost the Reds dear.
Mignolet conceded an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area after holding on to the ball for 21 seconds. Bordeaux subsequently scored from the set-piece, but Mignolet was bailed out by James Milner and Christian Benteke, who scored the goals to secure all three points.
After the match, Mignolet gave a somewhat flimsy excuse for his mistake, while he also posted a message to the Liverpool fans on Instagram which you can see by scrolling down this page.

Mignolet posted a photo of himself and manager Jurgen Klopp smiling after the match, alongside the caption: “Happy to get qualified for the knockout stages in the #UEL :D (y) #YNWA”
While the outcome was obviously good for Liverpool, this was not an individual performance to be pleased or proud about for Mignolet.
Doubts over Mignolet's Liverpool future
The Liverpool Echo handed the Belgium international a 4/10 rating for his efforts at Anfield, adding it was “one of those nights where he spread nervousness everywhere he went”.
Mignolet’s future at Anfield has been the subject of speculation over recent months - reports from Spain earlier this month claimed Klopp was keen to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen - and Thursday night’s performance will have done little to convince the fans or his manager that he’s the best man for the job in the long term.
In order to win competitions like the Premier League and the Europa League, it’s imperative that Liverpool have a reliable keeper in between the sticks.
Mignolet still has everything to prove.
