Michael Owen has made another bizarre comment on BT Sport, days after comparing Manchester United defender Daley Blind to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.
The retired striker hinted that the praise recently heaped on Chris Smalling has been excessive, and believes even he could play in central defence for this current Manchester United team.
Owen argues that United defend well as a team - with two holding midfielders, wide players who work hard and defensively-minded full-backs - and you can see his mini-rant by scrolling down to the embedded Twitter video on this page.

“Everyone’s raving about Chris Smalling, I could play at centre-half when I’ve got [Bastian] Schweinsteiger, [Morgan] Schneiderlin, two full-backs that don’t move, wide players that really do a good shift,” Owen said on the Fletch and Sav show.
“It’s a team game. It’s not like you six stay here and defend, you four go and attack.”

Smalling has been fantastic this season
Owen may have a point that Manchester United’s good defensive record this season is due to the team’s organisation - some would call it negative tactics on Louis van Gaal’s part - but he made himself look a bit silly by claiming he could replace Smalling at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence.
There’s no denying the fact that Smalling has been outstanding this season and fully deserves all the plaudits that have arrived his way.
This time last year, the England international’s future at Old Trafford was in real doubt, but the 26-year-old has knuckled down since then and enjoyed a remarkable 12 months.
