Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial struggling under Louis van Gaal claims Paul Parker

Published 13 Comments

Former Manchester United player Paul Parker has suggested that he is worried about Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay and has insisted that Louis van Gaal is to blame for their poor form.

Writing for Eurosport, Parker has stated that Martial 'doesn't look like he's enjoying himself' while he believes that Depay is 'probably feeling like a scapegoat'.

Martial enjoyed a wonderful start to his career on English soil but has failed to produce the goods recently. Depay, on the other hand, has failed to shine in the Premier League, but Parker feels sorry for the aforementioned duo.

With the Red Devils failing to fire in front of goal, Van Gaal's tactics have been heavily criticised and Parker has admitted that he expected the United boss to be more flexible.

Parker stated: "When Louis van Gaal arrived at United, I thought he too would be flexible. But we now have a situation where there are a lot of discontented players and we have to question why they are playing badly.

"I look at Martial and worry for him. He looks like a boy who doesn't smile anymore. He doesn't look like he's enjoying himself.

"The form Depay is showing hasn't just happened because he's playing in the Premier League. That boy probably feels like a scapegoat. He's in a country relatively close to where he's from, but feeling a million miles away."

After scoring three Premier League goals in his opening two games as a Manchester United player, Martial hasn't found the back of the net in his last six league outings. Van Gaal has used him out wide and up top, but there appears to be a lack of creativity in the side right now.

The struggles of captain Wayne Rooney have been well documented, so perhaps there really is a fundamental issue at the Theatre of Dreams.

Depay, too, has endured a torrid time: two goals in 10 league games isn't what the United faithful would have expected upon his arrival from PSV. In and out of the team, the Dutchman has a serious lack of confidence right now. Van Gaal must change the dynamic in Manchester sooner rather than later.
