Gareth Bale accused the media of inventing stories about his relationship with Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, but then immediately gave us the perfect opportunity to speculate.
The Welshman was speaking to Spanish reporters when one asked whether or not he believed Ronaldo was currently the best player in the world.
It is a reasonable question. With the Ballon d'Or ceremony approaching, it is a topic many are talking about. Ronaldo has been named in the final three alongside Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr but is currently tipped to finish second behind Messi.

Bale decided not to enter the debate, instead responding to the question with a non-commital answer. He claimed the 30-year-old was one of the best in the world, but the journalist wanted something firmer and asked him again.
Bale could only squirm further, saying: "That's up to you. He's a very, very...he's a great player."

Trouble a brewin'
It is now only a matter of time before the comments get back to Ronaldo. While the Portuguese may not take home his fourth Golden Ball in January, he still has an incredible ego that needs massaging on a daily basis. All Bale could have done is ruffled his feathers.
Animosity in the last thing the Real Madrid dressing room needs at the moment. Their season is ripping at the seams after a rather disastrous month. Not only did they lose to Barcelona on their own turf in emphatic fashion, they also got themselves kicked out of the Copa del Rey after fielding an ineligible player.
Now is a time to work together, to work as a team and massage the egos that need it. So why didn't Bale just say: "Yes, he's the best damn player the world has ever known!"?
We'll never know.
