Everton are eyeing Calum Chambers as a potential replacement for John Stones if the England international leaves Goodison Park, according to the Mirror.
Stones has been heavily linked with a move despite the Toffees fighting hard to keep him from Chelsea's clutches over the summer and Manchester United are now said to be interested in securing the 21-year-old's services.
The Daily Mail reported last night that Everton are planning once more to fight off all comers in January and over the summer amidst renewed interest from Chelsea and other European clubs - but now the Mirror say they're making contingency plans.
The paper says Chambers has emerged as the man Everton will target as Stones' replacement, despite his struggles to adapt to the centre-back position.
The England youngster is currently competing for a spot in Arsenal's midfield in the absence of Francis Coquelin and Mikel Arteta through injury, however he has not been included in Arsene Wenger's starting XI for their game against Aston Villa today.
The former Southampton man has made just four Premier League appearances so far this season having fallen behind Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista in the fight for a centre-back spot, while Hector Bellerin is Arsenal's first right-back.
With Mathieu Debuchy also fighting for a spot and reports suggesting that Arsenal could bring in another defensive midfielder in the winter window, Chambers could find his chances limited even further.
The Mirror say that Everton will watch his progress with interest, although they'll hope no action is required for the near future at least.
