Over the past few months, the respective reputations of Mesut Ozil and Eden Hazard have shifted in completely opposite directions.
Ozil, following two difficult seasons with Arsenal, has rediscovered his form and confidence and has arguably been the Premier League’s best player since the start of the season. The Germany international already has 15 league assists to his name, one short of the total number of league assists he provided during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns combined.
Hazard’s reputation, meanwhile, has taken a nose-dive following a dreadful start to the season. The Chelsea ace was deservedly named as the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Year last term but has registered just three assists this season and is still seeking his first league goal.

This was meant to be the season in which Hazard would close the gap on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the gap between world football’s best two players and Chelsea’s number 10 has widened considerably over the past few months.
It could even be argued that Ozil has overtaken Hazard in the list of the world’s current best players - and when you see this next stat perhaps some of you will be inclined to agree.
Following his two assists against Manchester City on Monday night, OptaJoe revealed that Ozil now has as many Premier League assists (29) than Hazard - despite having played 59 fewer games.
That’s pretty impressive and will no doubt provide additional ammunition for those who believe Hazard is overrated.
Hazard could return to his best now Jose has gone
But perhaps now that Jose Mourinho has left Chelsea, we’ll finally get to see Hazard at his mesmeric best once again.
