Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes that his club can retain the services of teammate Philippe Coutinho past the January transfer window as the Brazilian is happy at Anfield.
Coutinho has been linked with an exit from Merseyside increasingly as his reputation has grown at Liverpool and there have been fears recently that Jurgen Klopp might struggle to hold on to him.
La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have been mentioned in connection with him in the past - enough of a link to give all Reds fans cause for concern - but Lucas doesn’t think his compatriot will be heading anywhere anytime soon.
"I think we can hang on to Coutinho," Lucas said, as per the Daily Mail.
"The one thing I know, he is very happy here.
"He was at Inter and it didn't work for him, but he has found his feet here and he feels that people like him. He considers that important."
Transfer a bad idea
Speaking plainly, it would appear that it’s imperative Klopp keeps hold of Coutinho as he maintains his drive towards success in the Liverpool hot seat.
The Brazilian is a creative talent like few others in the Premier League and in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s exit he’s taken on almost talisman-like status.
Obviously, the former Inter Milan midfielder has plenty left to improve on and is far from the finished product, but if Klopp is looking to build an empire at Anfield he’d do well to keep Coutinho at its centre.
Fortunately for the moment, it looks as though the diminutive playmaker is happy at Liverpool as they look to fight for a top four finish.
Getting back into the Champions League would certainly aid Klopp’s chances of keeping Coutinho, particularly if other clubs are on the prowl.
