Per Mertesacker produces horror miss against Bournemouth

Per Mertesacker is many things. Tall. German. A defender. But a striker he is not.

The Arsenal ace produced a contender, nay a dead certainty, for miss of the season in his side's game against Bournemouth this afternoon.

The Gunners are currently 1-0 up against the south coast club thanks to Gabriel Paulista's goal from yet another Mesut Ozil assist, but it should have been two just after the half hour mark.

It was Ozil who created the chance once more, when he found Gabriel in the box from a corner - however the centre-back couldn't convert as his shot ricocheted off the post.

Not to worry, however, because Mertesacker was on hand to tuck home the simple tap in. Yep, there would be no problems here. Some how, he freaking missed - and you can see the mother of all fudge ups below.

If we're being generous, we could say that Mertesacker didn't have time to react to the ball coming off the post. As you can probably guess, the reaction on the internet was kind and merciful. Oh, no actually it wasn't.

Arsenal are looking to keep the pressure up on at the top of the table with Leicester and Manchester City and look good value for a win as things stand, with the second half still to come.
