Cristiano Ronaldo misses penalty for Real Madrid

Published 12 Comments

When Cristiano Ronaldo scores a goal, no one bats an eyelid. It's a common sight for Real Madrid fans, who were treated to another two from the Portuguese in today's game against Real Sociedad.

However, his match-winning brace was not the biggest story to do with the three-time Ballon d'Or winner. Yes, we know the only thing you want to see is the truly awful penalty he took in the 23rd minute.

With the score still balanced at 0-0, Ronaldo, who has been Real Madrid's top penalty taker since joining in 2009, confidently stepped up to the spot after Karim Benzema was bundled over by Yuri Berchiche in the box.

And he had every right to be confident. The Portuguese wonder had scored 49 La Liga goals from the penalty spot, missing only five up until that point. More impressively, every one of his 71 penalties in all competitions for Real Madrid had been on target. That has all changed.

Ronaldo skied his kick (video embedded below) way into the Bernabeu crowd, who responded with a barrage of hisses and whistles. Luckily, the 30-year-old was given the chance to rectify his error just 16 minutes later when Real Madrid won another penalty, to which he made no mistake.

Match winner

Typically, Ronaldo was still the match-winner for Real Madrid, scoring both goals to grant them a 2-1 victory. His second – a volley from a corner – was a peach as well. You can watch that goal right here:

After Ronaldo's second-half strike, Lucas Vazquez wrapped things up for Real Madrid in the 86th minute, making it 3-1 to send Real Madrid, albeit temporarily, to the top of La Liga.
