Jamie Carragher was so impressed with Mesut Ozil’s performance for Germany Under-21s against England back in 2009 that he was convinced Liverpool had to sign him.
Carragher admits he told his former teammate Steven Gerrard it was important Liverpool went for the technically-gifted playmaker while he was still at Werder Bremen after his devastating performance in the European Under-21 Championship final in Malmo.

“I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0 and said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for,” Carragher was quoted as saying by The Sun. “He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target.
“He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”
Ozil now showing his class at Arsenal
Ozil went on to star for Real Madrid before he was sold to Arsenal for £42.5 million in the summer of 2013.
After a difficult first two years at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal fans are now seeing the very best of the Germany international who has already registered 16 assists in the Premier League alone this season.
Ozil needs just five more assists to break Thierry Henry’s Premier League record.
