The self-assured Netherlands international had earned comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo due to his eye-catching exploits in the Eredivisie and was handed United’s iconic No. 7 shirt before the start of the season.

After a difficult few weeks - undoubtedly the most testing of his career so far - the Manchester Evening News have revealed that only two players in Louis van Gaal’s squad recorded a lower average rating than Memphis over the course of 2015.
The Dutch winger received a 5.5 rating - the same as Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj - which is only 0.2 higher than the average ratings of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao, the players with the lowest figures on the entire list.
At the opposite end of the spectrum were David de Gea, Anthony Martial and Chris Smalling who recorded average ratings of 6.9, 6.8 and 6.8 respectively.
Memphis must focus on football
While there’s no doubt that Memphis possesses huge talent, question marks have to be asked about his attitude and hunger to become a first-team star at Manchester United.
Reports that the player has splashed out a cool £250,000 on a Rolls Royce will inevitably frustrate the United faithful when he’s not producing the goods on the pitch.
Is Memphis one of these talented young players who believes his own hype, allows the money to go to his head and fails to fulfil his immense potential?
Only time will tell.
