It’s no secret that Cristiano Ronaldo has something of a fragile ego. It’s important for him that everyone at Real Madrid names him as the best player in the world when asked.
So, it comes as no surprise to discover that Ronaldo was left furious - according to Spanish newspaper Sport - when, in 2013, Zinedine Zidane backed Franck Ribery to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of the Portuguese superstar.
Zidane was quoted by AS, another Spanish paper, as explaining that both Cristiano and Ribery deserved to win the prestigious individual accolade - but that Ribery deserved to win it more after playing a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s treble success that season. Ronaldo was not happy - at all.

The words of Zidane, who at the time was working as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at the Bernabeu, were reportedly viewed as treacherous by Ronaldo.
Sport claim that one of the reasons Ronaldo agreed to sign a contract extension in September 2013 was because Florentino Perez had agreed to give him ‘unequivocal support’ in his campaign for the Ballon d’Or award.

This was the time, remember, when Ronaldo found himself trailing Lionel Messi 4-1 in terms of Ballon d’Or awards won.
Furthermore, Ronaldo was also perturbed when nobody of any ‘significant weight’ at Real Madrid accompanied him to the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich. Messi, in comparison, was joined by a large Barcelona delegation and the then-club president Sandro Rosell.

Ronaldo now finds himself working under Zidane after the Frenchman replaced Rafael Benitez as Real Madrid’s head coach on Monday.
It does appear that the relationship between the two men has improved since 2013 - but it will be fascinating to see how Ronaldo fares working under the former world-class playmaker over the forthcoming months.
