It’s NXT General Manager William Regal who opens the show and has a huge announcement to kick off 2016. The last significant moment of 2015 involving the NXT women saw Bayley retain her NXT Women’s Championship against Nia Jax at TakeOver: London and a new challenger would be crowned in the main event.

Regal announces that the main event will be a battle royal to determine Bayley’s next challenger for the NXT Women’s Championship before bringing out Sami Zayn to the ring where he received an enormous pop from the crowd.

Zayn told the NXT fans that he wants to be the first ever two-time NXT Champion, but he is interrupted by Samoa Joe – who lost to Finn Balor at TakeOver: London last month. Zayn and Joe exchange words about becoming the champion, and this brings out Baron Corbin.

More words are exchanged between the three, but it’s Zayn and Joe who start to brawl as Corbin walks away.

Tommaso Ciampa is back on NXT after a successful stint in 2015; his year starts off with success as he defeats Danny Birch with an arm submission.

The NXT Tag Team Champions are in action next in non-title action. Dash and Dawson take on the returning Ascension, who are still struggling to make an impact on the main roster, they receive a positive reaction from the fans that have seen them grow as a team for many years.

Despite the past success Konnor and Viktor have had on NXT, they are unable to defeat The Mechanics with the champions reigning supreme.

The penultimate bout of the evening sees Elias Samson pick up a win over Corey Hollis before the women hit the ring to see who will walk out the number one contender.

A number of women had the chance to shine with Eva Marie, Asuka, Deonna Purrazzo, Emma, Aliyah, Liv Morgan, Cameron, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Carmella and Alexa Bliss the participants involved in the match.

It looked as if Eva Maria had the match won after hiding outside of the ring before throwing out the final competitor. However, amongst all the anger Carmella – who was never eliminated from the match – threw Eva Marie out of the ring to win the match as Bayley came to the ring to congratulate the new number one contender.
