James Nesbitt somehow landed himself the gig of hosting the 2015 Ballon d’Or and embarrassed himself by pleading with Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to rejoin his beloved Manchester United when he leaves the Bernabeu.

The Northern Irish actor insisted he was only joking - but then asked Ronaldo the exact same thing less than a minute later.

It was all a little cringeworthy but Ronaldo, ever the professional, took it all in his stride. (Scroll down this page to see the video).

Ronaldo has constantly been asked about a return to Manchester United ever since he left Old Trafford for Real Madrid back in the summer of 2009.

Some United fans have been unable to get over the departure of the Portuguese superstar and have been pining for his return for the best part of six-and-a-half years now. Nesbitt, we can assume, falls into that category of Manchester United fan.

Video: Nesbitt asks Ronaldo to rejoin United

“Cristiano, I don’t know if you know, but I am a lifelong Manchester United fan,” Nesbitt says. “So when are you coming back to Old Trafford?”

Ronaldo looks surprised and smiles before saying “I know” after Nesbitt claimed he was only joking.

The Ballon d’Or host then asked Ronaldo what drives him on to be the best - nice original question there, James - before saying: “For those years that you hope to play football, please come back to Manchester United.”

Ronaldo smiled and shook his interview’s hand and was probably mightily relieved that particular conversation was over.

Ronaldo is more likely to join PSG

It seems very unlikely that the 30-year-old will return to Old Trafford when he decides to call time on his spell with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo stated on Monday that he wants to score another 500 goals before he retires - and one suspects he would go a lot closer to achieving that personal ambition if he joined a club in a slightly inferior league to either La Liga or the Premier League.

A summer move to Paris Saint-Germain suddenly appears even more likely.
