Free coats for all if Newcastle beat West Ham on Saturday

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has tried an unusual tactic in trying to get the Magpies out of relegation trouble - a free coat giveaway.

The Mirror reports that Sports Direct founder Ashley has set aside an estimated £2.4 million worth of Everlast padded jackets - valued at £59.99 each - should Steve McClaren's side beat West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

He originally tried the offer for Tuesday night's 3-3 draw with Manchester United and it's open to all supporters, regardless of which team they follow. Firstly, fans must like Sports Direct's official Facebook page. They're then asked to register, which entitles them to a free coat voucher to be redeemed online.

A Sports Direct source said: “Newcastle threw everything at Man Utd so Mike felt that it’s only fair that fans should get a second chance to claim their jacket. Mike knows that customers love our crazy prices and great giveaways.”

Such customers don't live in Newcastle, though. Protest groups regularly demonstrate against the miserly way Ashley runs their beloved football club - always cutting corners and sacrificing dignity. Fans unfurled a '#SportsDirectShame' banner across the Gallowgate on Tuesday night, focusing more on working conditions and payment of employees. It was quickly forced down by club stewards.

So all that's left is for Newcastle to beat West Ham - a tough task. Dimitri Payet scored twice to give the Hammers a 2-0 win in September's reverse fixture and the Frenchman returned from injury to inspire them to a mid-week win at Bournemouth.

Fifth in the Premier League, Slaven Bilic's side have the third best away record after stunning wins at Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. Newcastle have played much better lately but still preceded Tuesday's draw with four 1-0 defeats. New signings Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet are expected to play a role.
