Liverpool have made an approach to Southampton over the potential signing of striker Shane Long.
This has been reported by the Mirror, who claim that Saints have resisted the Reds' advances for the Republic of Ireland international.
The report claims that Liverpool were hoping to secure the player's signature for £8 million, but Southampton are intent on keeping him at the St Mary's.

Charlie Austin may well have arrived at Southampton from QPR, but it appears that he won't be replacing Long at the club.
Liverpool's reported move for Long could come as a surprise for fans, who would have been hoping to see a big name join the club in this transfer window.
Liverpool in need
But Liverpool are clearly in need of reinforcements in attack. Indeed, with Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Divock Origi on the sidelines, boss Jurgen Klopp has a lack of options at his disposal.
Christian Benteke, of course, has failed to prove his credentials on a consistent basis while the versatile Roberto Firmino has starred in attack recently.
It remains to be seen as to whether Liverpool will step up their interest in Long, but it's certainly going to be an interesting couple of weeks for the Merseyside outfit.
After suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester United on Sunday, Liverpool are clearly in need of strengthening as they go in search of claiming a top-four finish in the Premier League.
