We’re now less than a week away from the annual Royal Rumble match and the excitement continues to build towards the main event where Roman Reigns defends his WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
For the first time, the 30-man Royal Rumble match will see the championship being defended – rather than the winner earning a main event championship match at WrestleMania.
Reigns faces a mammoth task on Sunday with 29 other men looking to leave Orlando as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and for the first time, we’re placed in an interesting situation as another win for Reigns seems like too obvious a path to go down.

The same applies with Brock Lesnar as he’s the second of three stars the majority of WWE fans believe will walk out as the new champion if Reigns fails. If not Reigns or Lesnar, then a return for Triple H could be a way for him to be crowned the new champion.
However, WrestlingRumors are reporting that the WWE are currently planning another controversial finish to the Royal Rumble match, similar to the 1994 Royal Rumble, which saw Lex Luger and Bret Hart crowned the co-winners that year.

The popular finish that is being discussed recently is that Reigns and Lesnar will be the final two participants of the match – with the winner walking out as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The potential controversial finish means we could see both Lesnar and Reigns eliminated from the match at the same time.
If this is the case on Sunday, then Lesnar will still get a title opportunity but it won’t be at WrestleMania.
Lesnar is scheduled to work the Fastlane pay-per-view and this is where he could challenge Reigns for the championship title with the winner heading to WrestleMania as the defending champion.
WHO WILL LEAVE AS CHAMPION?
Judging by some other rumours circulating online, Reigns will be the one who walks out of Fastlane as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion while Lesnar could be in line to face Chris Jericho at WrestleMania.
This leaves the door open for Reigns to defend the title against Triple H at WrestleMania – if that’s the plan they’d be going with.
A main event match with Triple H isn’t something a lot of WWE fans want right now but, based on the current situation with injuries, it looks like the best option we could get.
In reality, the championship doesn’t even need to be on Reigns to make this match with Triple H a reality. There’s enough in the storyline between Reigns and the McMahon family that the championship doesn’t matter for now.
It can be utilised better on a different superstar, so perhaps a surprise win should be considered at the Royal Rumble. Something nobody will expect.
