Arsenal Wenger’s record against Chelsea without Jose Mourinho is rather amazing

Arsene Wenger’s struggles against Jose Mourinho are well documented.

In 15 meetings, Wenger defeated Mourinho just once while the Portuguese was manager of Chelsea. There are some that would be quick to wipe that 2015 Community Shield win from the records, too.

Then there’s Mourinho’s critical comments, which led to many touchline spats between the pair.

Fortunately for the Frenchman, Mourinho will not be in the opposing dug-out when Arsenal face Chelsea on Sunday. Guus Hiddink is his counterpart this time around.

Wenger has enjoyed great success against Chelsea when the Blues haven’t been managed by Mourinho, as a Daily Mirror report finds. Hiddink is one of 11 Chelsea managers Wenger has faced in his 19-and-a-bit year spell as the Gunners boss and, excluding his battles against Mourinho, the 66-year-old comes out on top more often than not.

To be fair, it would be near impossible to have a worse record with Mourinho in charge of Chelsea.

Win percentage (Premier League):

Chelsea with Mourinho: 0 per cent

Chelsea without Mourinho: 51.85 per cent

Points per game (Premier League):

Chelsea with Mourinho: 0.55

Chelsea without Mourinho: 1.61

Goals scored per game (Premier League):

Chelsea with Mourinho: 0.36

Chelsea without Mourinho: 0.63

Goals conceded per game (Premier League):

Chelsea with Mourinho: 1.55

Chelsea without Mourinho: 0.73

Arsenal are favourites to win Sunday’s game but it would have been interesting to see the odds if Mourinho was still in charge. Despite their lowly position in the table, the bookmakers might have given Chelsea the advantage considering Wenger’s repeated problems against Mourinho.

As it goes, Hiddink has failed to reinvigorate Chelsea’s season and Wenger will welcome back Mesut Ozil and (possibly) Alexis Sanchez from injury. It will be a surprise if he doesn’t further improve his stellar record against Chelsea sans Mourinho.
