A couple of bizarre stories involving Fernando Torres have emerged over the past few days.
Towards the end of last week the striker’s agent revealed he had received offers from eight different clubs - one of whom are prepared to make the Spaniard the highest-paid footballer in the world. Yes, really.
And a couple of days later it was reported by Spanish newspaper AS that Barcelona were keen on the 31-year-old. Again: yes, really.

On Tuesday, Guillem Balague was asked about the likelihood of Torres signing for the Catalan giants in the near future - but Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert is adamant it’s not going to happen.
Balague also revealed that Diego Simeone has doubts over the idea of signing Torres on a permanent deal this month, before Atletico Madrid’s two-window transfer ban comes into force.
Balague: 'Absolutely nothing there'
“Absolutely nothing there,” Balague responded - per the Sky Sports website - when asked if there’s any truth in the Torres to Barcelona reports. “He is under contract to AC Milan and Atletico are saying as a club they would like to sign him before the ban in the summer, although Diego Simeone is not so convinced. Nothing in terms of Barcelona though.”
Why would Barcelona want Torres?
The idea that Barcelona would turn to Torres in a bid to bolster their attacking options is fanciful to say the least.
Torres has been in steep decline since leaving Liverpool for Chelsea in 2011 and has failed to rediscover his best form at the Vicente Calderon, where he first established himself as a household name.
Two goals in 24 appearances for Atleti this season is a pitiful return - and you can understand why Simeone is reluctant to offer the striker a permanent contract, despite his status as a fan favourite.
Atleti must ease goalscoring burden on Griezmann
Atletico need another striker to ease the goalscoring burden on Antoine Griezmann, but they could be stuck with Torres.
