Chelsea reject Atletico Madrid’s player plus cash offer for Diego Costa

Published 3 Comments

It seems Atletico Madrid are very keen to bring Diego Costa back to Spain from Chelsea.

The Mirror understand that Diego Simeone’s side have offered cash plus striker Jackson Martinez in order to bring the Brazil-born Spain international back to the Vicente Calderon.

However, Chelsea have rejected the offer, keen to hold onto the controversial 27-year-old for the remainder of the season.

Had Atletico offered Antoine Griezmann as part of the deal, it may have been a different story - reports from the weekend claim Roman Abramovich has identified the France international as a potential replacement for Eden Hazard, who finally netted his first goal of the season against MK Dons on Sunday.

But Martinez, the 29-year-old Colombia international, has failed to produce his best form since joining Atleti from FC Porto last summer. Two goals in 15 La Liga appearances means the South American striker’s stock has fallen over recent months.

Costa's form has improved of late

Costa hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons so far, but his form has improved since Guus Hiddink replaced Jose Mourinho last month.

He netted a brace against Watford on Boxing Day, and then scored four goals in five appearances against Crystal Palace, Scunthorpe United, Everton and the winner against Arsenal.

Costa denied he wanted to return to Atletico last summer

It was reported last summer - by Spanish newspaper Marca - that Costa longed for a return to Atletico Madrid because he wasn’t enjoying life in London.

But days later, Costa refused these rumours and was quoted as telling Chelsea TV, per the London Evening Standard: "[It is] quite a simple answer.

"It’s always a bit more difficult in the first season for adaptation, but I have no reason to leave this place, I love it, the fans love me and I want to stay."

Arsenal v Chelsea - Premier League

That Atletico have made a formal offer to bring him back to Spain suggests Costa may have been playing to the gallery with those particular comments.
