Jurgen Klopp’s team failed to land Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Alex Teixeira despite Shakhtar’s coach admitting he wouldn’t stand in the Brazilian midfielder’s way.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds failed to meet the Ukraine club’s £57 million valuation for the midfielder.

It meant Marko Grujic and Steven Caulker were Liverpool’s only January signings, the pair joining from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1m and on loan from QPR respectively.

Big risk

Klopp urged fans not to be disappointed that the Teixeira deal broke down and in his defence, £57m for a 26-year-old without Premier League experience is a huge risk.

Plus, with Philippe Coutinho close to returning from a hamstring injury, Liverpool already have a brilliant attacking midfielder.

So it’s not all doom and gloom at Anfield. Martin Skrtel and Daniel Sturridge are also nearing a return to action as Liverpool continue their pursuit of a top four spot with a trip to leaders Leicester on Tuesday.

Norwich City v Liverpool - Premier League

Liverpool are currently seventh, eight points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham.

It would mark a productive first season in England if Klopp can lead his side to a European berth.
