Memphis Depay has the potential to become the best wingers in the world, according to former Manchester United player Andrei Kanchelskis.
The 21-year-old joined United in the summer from PSV for £25 million but has failed to earn a regular starting position in Louis van Gaal’s side this season.
Depay has only featured 13 times for the Red Devils in the Premier League scoring twice and has often been criticised by his own fans for some of his performances.
But Kanchelskis, who was a winger himself under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes the Dutchman has all the attributes to be one of the best in that position in world football.
“He is a very good player. He’s a skilful winger with good crossing ability and a great change of pace. He has the potential to become the best winger in the world,” the Russian told 888sport.com.
The summer signing that has made the biggest impact for United this season is Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman has been in impressive form recently and has scored six goals from his 19 appearances in the league. The 20-year-old has played in a variety of positions, including as a winger, but has lately found joy playing as an out-and-out striker.
Kanchelskis, who won two Premier League titles during his five years at Old Trafford, believes that Martial also has a bright future but urges Van Gaal to play him in his natural position.
“Martial is no out and out winger like Ryan Giggs was in his early days," he added. His best position is attacking down the middle. That is where his future will be.”
United have been unconvincing for large parts this campaign but sit in fifth place, just five points behind Arsenal in fourth. Van Gaal’s side travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday knowing they need to victory to keep their faint title hopes alive, as well keeping up the chase for a top-four finish.
