Angel di Maria is keen to banish his Manchester United memory.

Angel di Maria calls Manchester United spell a sad experience

Published Add your comment

Manchester United fans want to forget Angel di Maria’s sole season at the club ever happened.

So too does Di Maria.

The Argentina international, a £59.7 million signing for United in the summer of 2014, suffered a miserable second half to his one season in England and was sold to Paris Saint-German last August.

Burglars attempted to break into Di Maria’s Cheshire home, he was sent off in United’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Arsenal in March and started just one more game for the Red Devils following the dismissal - the final game of the season, in which a hamstring injury forced him off after just 23 minutes.

Talk about tumultuous.

After not travelling on United’s pre-season tour of America, United sold the winger to PSG for £44.3m.

Rediscovered his form

The 27-year-old has rediscovered his form in France, scoring 12 goals and making 10 assists for the club. He’s unsure as to what exactly went wrong at Old Trafford.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Di Maria said: “Manchester was a sad experience. Things did not go the way I expected, I was disappointed and I could not surface.

“Honestly, I don’t remember what happened and I don’t want to remember.”

It’s hardly surprising that Di Maria wishes to forget his United adventure, which has left a blemish on an otherwise successful C.V.

The former Real Madrid man scored just three goals in 27 league games for United and fell out with Louis van Gaal, who failed to pin Di Maria down to one position.

English fans will get to see Di Maria in action when PSG take on Chelsea in the first knockout round of the Champions League. The first leg will be played at Parc des Princes on February 16 and Di Maria will return to England on March 9 for the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
