Barcelona's Neymar and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo both celebrated their birthdays on Friday with the former turning 24-years-old and the latter, 31.
In footballing terms, it is a significant age gap. Ronaldo is approaching the twilight of an illustrious career while Neymar still has plenty of time on his hands to get even better. Out with the old and in with the new, as they say.
Both are currently sharing the same platform at the top of world football. They were both podium finishers at the Ballon d'Or award for 2015 with Ronaldo finishing second behind Leo Messi and Neymar, third.
But, obviously, Neymar will one day have the main stage to himself. Ronaldo's prowess will inevitably diminish as his body succumbs to age while Messi, at 28, is no spring chicken himself.
The question is: how far can Neymar go? He seems certain to win the Ballon d'Or at some point in his career while few would bet against him vaulting Ronaldo's achievement of three Golden Balls. And, according to the statistics, he looks more than capable of doing so.
Uefa.com celebrated the Brazilian's birthday by comparing Neymar's career statistics with that of Ronaldo when he turned 24. The result is significant. The Brazil captain leads significantly with 209 career goals compared to Ronaldo's 111.
He has also won twice as many major trophies as Ronaldo with Neymar already boasting 14 winner's medals. In fact, to this day, Ronaldo still has only 13 major team honours. Thank goodness for the swathe of individual accolades you've managed to accumulate, ay Ronny?
