Memphis was criticised by pundits and United fans on social media after his intended pass for Morgan Schneiderlin rolled harmlessly into the arms of Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea then countered and rescued a point thanks to Costa’s stoppage-time equaliser.
But Rooney believes it’s harsh to pin the blame on Memphis, who entered the fray as an 87th-minute substitute.

“I think we're all disappointed,” Rooney was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. “Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away. A lot of things happened from when you give the ball away to when they've scored the goal, so I don't think we can stand here and blame Memphis.
“I think there were other things which happened and why they've scored.”
Little is going right for Memphis at Man Utd
Very little has gone right for Memphis following his £25 million summer transfer from PSV Eindhoven.
Louis van Gaal handed the 21-year-old the club’s iconic number seven shirt at the start of the season, but the Netherlands international has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford following a string of below-par performances.
His last start for the Red Devils came against Stoke City on Boxing Day - and he lasted just 45 minutes after his calamitous headed back-pass gifted the Potters a goal.
United fans hoped Memphis would become the club’s new Cristiano Ronaldo but many supporters are now questioning whether he possesses the required mentality to make it at Old Trafford.
