The second is future City boss, Pep Guardiola.

The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that Guardiola wants to make Busquets one of his first City signings when he joins the club in the summer.

The two have a great relationship and it was under Guardiola that Busquets became one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

Busquets was a key member of Guardiola’s Barcelona B side, before the 45-year-old promoted the La Masia graduate to the first team in 2008.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that the Barcelona star is full of praise for his former boss.

Speaking to ESPN - and reported by Spanish newspaper Marca - the 27-year-old said: “I always said that there are only two people who can change my decision to be here. One is my wife, and today we are here and happy with the club, so I do not think there is a problem on a personal level.

“On a sporting level, the other person would be Guardiola. It is clear that I owe Guardiola a lot and for me to work with him would be an honour.”

However, Busquets was quick to dispel any inevitable rumours that his words could be construed as a ‘come and get me’ plea to City’s new manager.

“He knows that [Barcelona] is my club and the best thing for me and the club is that I’m here and I would never ask to go.”

Trophy haul

Busquets won three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and the Copa del Rey twice under Guardiola, who left the Spanish club in 2012 and joined Bayern Munich a year later.

He is expected to overhaul City’s squad and Busquets would certainly play a big part in Guardiola’s plan to win the Premier League and Champions League at the Citizens.

With Yaya Toure’s future at the club in question, Busquets would be a capable replacement for the Ivorian should he leave in the summer.
