The Sunday Mirror dropped an absolute doozy of a bombshell on – you guessed it – Sunday, claiming Manchester United are, in fact, not at all interested in hiring Jose Mourinho and will press ahead with their original plan to hand control over to Ryan Giggs.
Journalist Simon Mullock has gone completely against the grain with this story. With many suggesting that Mourinho's place in the Old Trafford dugout is all but set in stone, he believes executives are leaning towards Giggs when it comes to replacing Louis van Gaal.
The line of succession was the original plan for the Red Devils. Van Gaal was supposed to be in charge until at least 2017 when Giggs would be deemed appropriately experienced to take charge on a permanent basis.
After a disastrous campaign, the Dutchman is now almost certain to be sacked at some point this season leaving Giggs and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in limbo.
On one hand, there is concern that Giggs is not ready to take charge and plenty of fans have expressed their concerns. They fear an ill-timed and unsuccessful managerial stint will only serve to damage Giggs' legacy. To add to that, Mourinho is available and has a proven track record of winning major trophies.
On the other, it appears Giggs has been promised the chance to manage the club and Mourinho's arrival would almost certainly spell the end of the Welshman's continuous service to the Red Devils. The Special One would bring Rui Faria as his assistant and Giggs is unlikely to accept a demotion.
While some reports would have you believe the Mourinho deal is done, Mullock claims to have heard from an insider that it is Giggs who will actually get the…gig.
A United insider said: “Appointing Mourinho would only paper over the cracks. The club have a long-term plan that they intend to stick to.”
