Since the inception of the Premier League, 23 teams have been relegated and in May, we will know who team number 24 will be.
If Jamie Carragher is correct, that team will be Aston Villa, of whom Carragher said: “I think they are the worst I have seen. That’s how bad it goes.”
The Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool legend added: “They’re an embarrassment Aston Villa, they have been for a few years.”

No doubt if you were one of the Villa faithful watching Carragher’s old side Liverpool, as they clinically took Aston Villa apart in their recent 6-0 win, you might well agree that Villa were an embarrassment.
But, the worst Premier League team – EVER?
THE TABLE DOESN’T LIE
Each year, when the Premier League champions are crowned, managers tell us that ‘the table doesn’t lie’ In other words, the team that wins the title, because they have the most points, are worthy champions over the course of a full season.
If that’s the case then we must also take it that the team which is relegated is the worst team, over the course of a full season.
Take a look at the ‘Premier League Relegated Teams Table’ below.
This table below, specially designed for GiveMeSport, compares all the teams that have been relegated, since the very first Premier League, back in the 1992/93 season.
The first thing you will notice is that, for the first three seasons, there were still 22 teams. It wasn’t until the 1995/96 season that the league was reduced to 20 teams, meaning that the table compares relegated teams who played differing numbers of matches.
Which is why we have added a key piece of data, to allow a fair and even comparison of teams to be made: ‘Points Per Game’
Premier League Relegated Teams
So, is Jamie Carragher right?
Well, the only fair way we feel we can judge is on a statistical, season-by-season comparison and once that logic is applied, it is very clear that the worst Premier League team of all time are: Derby County 2007/08.
The All-Time Losers
By whatever means you use, to make a judgement about which team has been the worst, Derby County have to be the all-time losers.
In terms of games won, they are the worst – only one game won in an entire season!
If you use points, they are the worst – a total of just 11 points in 38 matches – which is five points less than Villa currently, who still have 12 games to play.
Goals scored, and Derby are still the worst team in PL history, scoring just 20 goals in 38 games; the same as Villa currently but you would expect Villa to add to their measly tally in the next 12 games.
As far as goals against is concerned, Derby didn’t do so bad; they are only the third-worst Premier League team of all time, with Swindon Town, who conceded 100 goals and Ipswich Town, letting in 93, both being worse than Derby.
And when we use the fairest yardstick of all; average-points-per-game, Derby are unquestionably the worst of all time, with an average-points-per-game of just 0.29.
To give you an idea of how bad that was, Aston Villa are currently averaging 0.62 points-per-game, which is more than double what Derby County managed.
Premier League Relegated Teams Best to Worst
So although the team who are currently propping up the Premier League are, admittedly, not very good and whilst the 6-0 spanking they received by Liverpool was embarrassing, for their fans, it looks as if Carragher might be overstating the case just a bit when he labels Villa as the worst Premier League team – ever!
The final table, below, shows that even if Aston Villa were to lose every game from now, until the end of the season, they would still have enough points (16) to place them only third from bottom and should they maintain their current average-points-per-game for the remaining 12 games, the table shows they would finish with 25 points, making them only the seventh worst Premier League team of all time, behind Derby County, Sunderland 05/06, Portsmouth, Sunderland 02/03, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Premier League Relegated Teams - Villa Projection
So, Jamie, whilst Aston Villa were, without a doubt, utterly awful in going down 0-6 to Liverpool, it looks as if they are not quite the worst there’s ever been.
Won 1; Lost 29; Goals For 20; Goal Difference -69 and an average of 0.29 points-per-game.
The undisputed, unchallengeable holders of the title ‘Worst Ever Premier League Team’ goes to Derby County!
