Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle believes the only way that Arsenal can beat Barcelona tonight is if they abandon any attacking intent and hope to keep Luis Enrique's side at bay with a resolute defensive display.
Arsenal go into the tie on the back of an uninspiring 0-0 draw against Hull in the FA Cup, while Barcelona opened up a nine-point lead in La Liga over the weekend after a 2-1 win against Las Palmas.
The Catalan club are heavy favourites to retain their European crown while Arsenal are hoping to recreate their 2-1 victory against their illustrious rivals from 2011.
However, Hoddle - now working as an ambassador for @UniBet, believes Arsene Wenger’s men will have to adapt their game in the hope of containing Barcelona, rather than fighting fire with fire.
He said: “They’re going to have to defend really deep and make sure they break and counter against Barcelona. that’s the only hope.”
"I think if Arsenal try and open up, and try and make this into a football game, they will come unstuck in a big way."
Playmaker Mesut Ozil has been Arsenal’s key performer this season, with 17 Premier League assists to his name to date - and he has Thierry Henry’s league record of 20 in his sights.
Hoddle believes the German international will have to be at his very best in order for the Gunners to pull off the improbable.
“Arsenal really have to defend well and the likes of Ozil has to get plenty of the ball to release the strikers and counter-attack,” he said.
Arsenal haven’t made it beyond the last-16 of the Champions League since 2010. Can they do it this season?
