In the summer, Premier League clubs spent a total of £859 million on new players. While the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City were buying players for a total value of well over £100 million, Leicester City were spending just £26 million.
Not included in this figure was the free signing of left-back Christian Fuchs, who has been one of the best buys of the season.
Despite his excellent performances in recent months, Fuchs wasn’t a regular part of the Leicester side in the early weeks of the season, with Jeffrey Schlupp instead the first-choice left-back. It was only when the Foxes conceded five goals at home to Arsenal when Claudio Ranieri decided to favour the more defensive option of Fuchs, who has missed only one game since.

The Austria captain has bought crucial experience to the Leicester team, not just in terms of amount of games played, but other than Robert Huth, he is the only player in the squad to play in the Champions League. The 29-year-old has the advantage of playing in a lot big games, something that could be very important to his side in the title race.
Fuchs has also bought a laid back approach to the King Power Stadium, saying earlier this month: “I like to have fun and to show it. I like to communicate with people, dress up as Santa Claus. Life is not always about being serious. As a team, there is some trash talk on the pitch between us — it is fun. That is the spirit we have. If you enjoy it, you definitely perform better.”
Alongside his defensive work, Fuchs is also very useful from set pieces. He has provided three assists for his team mates this season, most notably setting up Jamie Vardy for his record-breaking goal against Manchester United in November.
Things could have been very different for the full-back however, who was persuaded to move to England by former Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, so could have been easily disheartened when he was sacked.
Instead, he has been one of the best left-backs in the Premier League this season and could finish the season with a league winners’ medal.
