Which words do top managers use to motivate their players before a big match?

Passion? Hunger? Desire?

Well according to Louis van Gaal, the word he often uses is “horny” and that's exactly how he wants his United players to play on Thursday when they face Midtjylland.

Van Gaal’s side were embarrassed by the Danish minnows last week, flopping to a 2-1 defeat in the first-leg.

And the beleaguered boss has explained what attitude their players must have at Old Trafford in the return fixture.

"Desire - it is a great word,” he told reporters.

"I often use the word horny with my players.”

Unattractive football

It’s a bizarre instruction from the Dutchman, especially as United’s football has been far from sexy this season.

And strange comments like this will do him no favours with United fans, with their patience having already been tested to the absolute limit this season.

Van Gaal is on the brink of getting sacked as the Red Devils manager with his side fifth in the Premier League.

They have very little chance of achieving a top four finish as they sit six points adrift of Manchester City.

They also crashed out of a fairly comfortable group in the Champions League while they were dumped out of the League Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough at Old Trafford.

Threat of the Danish minnows

The Europa League and FA Cup pose as the only way they can salvage their uninspiring season but Van Gaal admits  have the potential to cause his team even more problems in the second-leg.

"I think Midtjylland has a very good organisation, very detailed and the players want to perform that organisation,” he said.

"They play with diagonal pressing. I do that also with my team. Not many teams are doing that.

"And when I see the data of Midtjylland they have always won against English opponents.”

Incoming Mourinho

Every match Van Gaal goes into has the potential to be his last in charge of Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho has been linked with the job ever since he was sacked as Chelsea manager in December, but it appears he’s only willing to take over at the end of the season.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean United chiefs won’t sack Van Gaal during the season. Two seasons ago they sacked David Moyes during the campaign, leaving Ryan Giggs to take over until the summer.

The same thing could happen again this season, or they could persuade Mourinho to join sooner rather than later.

Either way, Van Gaal’s job is hanging by a thread and telling the media that he wants his players to be “horny” is hardly helping matters.
