After Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his fight with Conor McGregor owing to a broken foot, Nate Diaz took the Brazilian's place and immediately stepped into the "McGregor opponent" villain role in the pantomime that is a UFC fight.
In their first pre-fight press conference we were treated to the usual bravado we would expect from both men.
And then Diaz accused McGregor and basically everybody else in the UFC of being on steroids. No one even asked. He just blurted it out.
"Everybody is on steroids," Diaz said on Wednesday during a UFC 196 press conference. "The whole UFC. Everybody."
"And you [McGregor] and [Rafael] dos Anjos and [Anthony] Pettis and everybody," Diaz said. ... "You're on steroids."
McGregor laughed turned to the raucous crowd before saying "I'm just an animal."
McGregor seemed incredulous at Diaz's false assertion, and with good reason. The Irishman was tested eight times last year for illegal substances and came through each and every one of them unscathed.
The same cannot be said for two of Diaz's teammates, Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields. Melendez was suspended for one year by the UFC back in June 2015 for failing a post-fight drug test thanks to heightened levels of testosterone. Shields, on the other hand, was suspended for six months in 2012 and later admitted it was for diuretics used to cut weight.
McGregor made sure to bring this up:
"I'm not on no steroids," he said. "What the f*ck are you talking about? Your two teammates were on steroids. Your two boys. The Skrap Pack. Remember that? Did you know they were taking that stuff?"
Something tells us this isn't the end of the sh** talking between these two. It's only going to get better from here.
