Liverpool must have a defensive clear-out in the summer

For years Liverpool have had the same problem, they have leaked goals. This has not changed this season and it continues to cost the Reds points, as it famously did the title in the 2013/14 season.

This summer will bring about Jurgen Klopp’s first real chance to make big changes to his squad, and it is a chance he must take.

This season Liverpool have continued to struggle defensively and have conceded 36 goals. No other team in the top 14 of the Premier League have conceded more.

If it wasn’t for their 6-0 win over a shocking Aston Villa team a week ago, Liverpool would have a negative goal difference, something that could be crucial when it comes to qualification for European football.

The Reds squad is certainly short on quality defenders. This highlights a series issue in Liverpool’s transfer policy, having spent well over £60 million on the current crop of defenders, only for them to be constantly questioned for their performances.

One of these questionable buys has been Dejan Lovren, who became the club’s most expensive defender in history when he joined from Southampton for a fee of £20 million. Since then, the Croatian has been error prone and has struggled to hold down a place in the first team.

It is a similar story for Mamadou Sakho who has been heavily criticised for his lack of ability on the ball while Alberto Moreno has been regularly caught out in terms of his positioning at left-back. Given that their attacking play has improved greatly in recent weeks, their defensive frailties are costing them heavily.

When he arrived at Anfield, Klopp announced his target was to win a Premier League title by the end of his four-year contract. However as it showed during the 2013/14 season, when Liverpool conceded 50 goals, this cannot happen if he doesn’t fix his leaky defence.

Klopp has made his first move in the transfer market to correct this problem by agreeing a deal to bring in Joel Matip from Schalke at the end of the season, but if he wants to win the Premier League, he has a lot more to do.
