The Joe Johnson era in Brooklyn has come to and after the Nets confirmed their decision to waive the seven-time All-Star on Thursday evening.

Since arriving in New York in a 2012 trade that saw Brooklyn send five players and a first-round draft pick to Atlanta, the veteran point guard has helped the Nets to three playoff appearances.

Moving on

Now, though, with the franchise struggling at the wrong end of the Eastern Conference, the player and team have agreed to a contract buyout - a move that could see the 34-year-old link up with one of this season's contenders.

Speaking after releasing an official statement confirming Johnson's departure, Nets General Manager Sean Marks said the veteran had earned the right to join a contender:

"I think he’s deserved the right to [play on a playoff team if that’s what he wants],” Marks told WFAN, via Sports Illustrated.

For his part, Johnson took to social media to thank the Brooklyn franchise and its fans for the support he had received over the past four years.

The Arkansas native was ultimately unable to bring the Nets a title in his spell with the team but, in averaging 11.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this season, he could yet provide a timely boost for another franchise in their quest for the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
