Marcus Rashford enjoyed a night he’ll remember for the rest of his life when Manchester United bested FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday.
His brace was a feat sure to be talked about at social events and family gatherings for a long time to come - unfortunately his mother, Mel, won’t be able to share her memories of the game.
The wrong call
That’s because she wasn’t in attendance to see her son make his United debut, after being told by the player himself to stay at home.
According to The Sun, Rashford told his mum - who has been a regular fixture at Old Trafford this year, waiting to see him make his United bow - not to bother coming to the clash with Midtjylland because there was so little chance of him playing.
Initially named as a sub for the European encounter, Rashford was given his big break when Anthony Martial pulled up with a hamstring problem in the warm-up.
The 18-year-old scored two goals to help United on their way to a 5-1 win - it’s safe to assume his days of anonymity in the United camp are over.
You’ve got to feel for his mum, of course, but we’re sure she’ll get the chance to see Marcus in action again before too long. The praise for his maturity mid-week has been plentiful and long-lasting - Van Gaal’s aptitude for working with youngsters will only help his development.
