Real Madrid fans heckle players after Atletico Madrid defeat

Real Madrid supporters are a notoriously difficult bunch to please - and they certainly don’t react well to defeat.

Zinedine Zidane’s star-studded squad will have been acutely aware that the fans would be fuming after Saturday’s 1-0 loss to local rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

This was Atletico’s third successive victory at the Bernabeu and, more importantly, it ended Real Madrid’s slim hopes of catching Barcelona in the title race.

So, it will come as no surprise to hear that hundreds - if not thousands - of angry fans waited outside the Bernabeu to heckle their players.

Or, more specifically, players they felt failed to give 100 per cent on the day.

Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo were jeered and insulted, with shouts of “mercenaries” heard in a video obtained by El Dia Despues - per 101 Great Goals - which you can see by clicking the video below.

Ronaldo's post-match comments didn't help

No doubt the Real Madrid faithful will have been even more perturbed after hearing Ronaldo’s post-match comments.

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner said Los Blancos might be top of La Liga if the rest of his teammates were at his level - as if he was Real Madrid’s standout player against Atletico.

Has Ronaldo underachieved in terms of trophies won?

For his goalscoring exploits alone, Ronaldo is a Real Madrid legend.

However, it could be argued that the former Manchester United star has underachieved in terms of team trophies won since arriving at the Bernabeu in 2009.

One La Liga title in seven years is a poor return - as is, it could be argued, one Champions League title.

For this reason, Real Madrid fans are unlikely to ever idolise Cristiano in the same way they did - and still do - the likes of Raul.
