After Liverpool’s painful Capital One Cup final defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he’s already planning for next season.
The Reds sit ninth in the Premier League, with very little chance of achieving a top four finish, giving Klopp time to evaluate his squad.
The German took over the Anfield hot-seat in October and has already made it clear which players he likes, and which players he doesn’t quite fancy.
Liverpool have already announced the signings of Marko Grujic - who has returned to Red Star Belgrade on loan - and Joel Matip on a free transfer but the former Borussia Dortmund manager has admitted that the club are meticulously preparing for next campaign.
“Yes, we are planning for next season. Clearly we plan for next season. We have to wait for the right decision and we have to think about a lot of things,” he told reporters.
“There is nothing to say yet. It is not I can say that we are close to this decision or that decision. But we work the whole day and it is not just preparing for games.
“We don't have to be first or anything (in the transfer market), but in the end, we have to plan for the future and that is what we are doing.”
According to The Sun, there is likely to be a massive overhaul of the Liverpool squad with Christian Benteke, Alberto Moreno and Simon Mignolet all coming under fire from fans in recent weeks.
While there are rumours surrounding these first-team regulars, the contracts of some fringe players, including Kolo Toure, Jose Enrique and Joao Teixeira, all expire in the summer.
But one player that Liverpool fans would hate to see leave the club on a free is Jon Flanagan who is also out of contract at the end of the season.
Club captain Jordan Henderson claimed that Flanagan deserves a new deal and his boss agreed with him.
“Flanno is our boy,” he said.
“We will do everything to come together and hopefully it is a positive solution to both sides.
“The Flanno situation, the best news is he is back. But after a long long injury, you have to be careful. That's not easy for Flanno, but really we have to do it.
“Now after a game he needs longer to recover. Not always a game, after a hard training session too, we have to say now stop, and that is difficult for him.”
Liverpool fans should be excited to learn that Klopp is working hard to build for next season given his history in the transfer market.
Klopp brought a whole host of world-class talent to Dortmund, including Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan - for a combined cost of around £10 million.
Kopites will be hoping he can work his magic again this summer as he looks to re-build this Liverpool squad.
